Marifer STUDENTS WERE FINALLY READY TO BEGIN their own Magritte-inspired LEARNING OBJECTIVES Middle-school students will … • • • • • • learn about surrealism and René Magritte. learn basic one-point perspective techniques. apply basic geometry in their art create an original composition. create realistic shadow with color mixing. create a compositional theme that ties the object into the use of details in the room. NATIONAL ART STANDARDS • • • Understanding and applying media, techniques and processes. Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas. Making connections between visual arts and other disciplines. other dark colors such as browns, purples, blues, greens and sometimes even red. The learning this simple handout facilitated was amazing! Tip: Have students create the shadow color first, then add on top of it the colors they want to use for the object. Students may have to blend back and forth between the colors to get the right mix. Crayon seems to be a better choice for this. Students are asked to come to the next class with an idea of a small or unusually large object they would like to draw in their room. (Have encyclopedias or Internet access available for those who need help or visual support for their ideas.) march 2014 work. Using the document camera, I guided them through the drawing. We first drew the vanishing point in the center area of the paper, then created a square or rectangular box around the vanishing point with a ruler, while I explained to the students that the box would become the back wall of our rooms. The vanishing point did not need to be at the center of the box, but it was important for the sides of the box to be parallel to the sides of the paper. Using a ruler, we then drew lines outward from the vanishing point, to the corners of the box, on to the edges of the paper. This created the floor, ceiling and three walls of our rooms.
