At the risk of overstating the intent of this video, the purchaser should know that this is not an instructional drawing presentation. The entire focus is to present detailed factual information about the bones and muscles of humans, how they are integrated together and how they move. The viewer is then left to their own devices to interpret these forms, and how they would affect figure drawing.–P.H. REVIEWS continued from page 12 www.onairvideo.com BoTANICAL SKETCHBooK (2010; $24.95), by Mary Ann Scott with Margaret Stevens. Interweave Books. This book is appropriate for highschool students and adults interested in furthering their interests and abilities for using plant life as the subject for their art. On a personal level, it tells the story of the author’s journey from being an enthusiastic amateur painter to an accomplished botanic artist. The text and illustrations are from sketchbooks and paintings Scott completed during a distance-learning course (run by the Society of Botanical Artists). She began painting in her home in northern Italy in 2006. Her work was sent to Margaret Stevens, then president of England’s Society of Botanical Artists. This book shows Scott’s work, with firsthand accounts of the joys and challenges she experienced. Images from every assignment she undertook—from her first efforts at drawing a tulip to her advanced paintings made for her diploma portfolio—are included. The book contains the exercises, color charts and finished studies she completed. The specific assignments are presented in detail, along with the tutor’s comments in response to Scott’s work. An excellent bibliography is included. An excellent “counterweight” to the plethora of images drawn from technology and mass production, teachers who wish to draw attention to the visual detail and intricacies of nature will find this a valuable resource.–J.J.H. 20% off Offer, For Use At www.UnitedNow.com Use code AA2012B at checkout to receive 20% off your next order.
