David Santina > 20 > by Michelle Daddino T his is one of my favorite lessons to do with my kindergarten students as the children seem to love it, everyone is successful, and both the children and I get many ooohs and aaaahhhs from people admiring the work in the halls. I am always pleasantly surprised with how a little planning and effort on my part results in kindergarten students producing such amazing artwork! These beautiful and colorful sunflowers were inspired by the book Camille and the Sunflowers by Laurence Anholt, which does an amazing job of introducing young children to the art and life of Vincent van Gogh. The book begins by portraying van Gogh as a painter coming into town who comes to stay with Camille and his father, the postman. The story illustrates many of van Gogh’s famous paintings, and even deals with van Gogh’s hardships in a way that is appropriate for young children. Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings are the main topic of the story, which is why I use it as an introduction to this lesson. After I read the children the story, we have a brief discussion of the story and van Gogh’s life, and I show them more examples of his work.
